Snow may be keeping us indoors more than we prefer and single digit temps are trying to chill us to the bone, but I have whiskey in my glass to help keep me warm. I’m drinking a variation on the classic Manhattan and it’s a great cocktail for a “snowed in” happy hour.
The List:
- 3 oz of whiskey
- ¾ oz of sweet vermouth
- ¼ oz walnut liqueur
- 3 dashes of walnut bitters
- Cherry for garnish
Being a classic, there is often discussion on the purist view of the recipe. In this case, let’s just bypass all of that by adding walnut for a unique flavor profile in the iconic drink. The walnut liqueur is substituting for some of the sweet vermouth and a little will go a long way. The walnut style bitters in place of the angostura helps keep our flavor on point.
The Moves:
- Combine the liquors and bitters in a shaker
- Add ice and stir gently
- Garnish a chilled martini glass with a cherry
- Strain the Manhattan over the cherry
I hope you try one of these tomorrow after work or over the weekend!
